OCR Gate Technology

ContainerCo is the culmination of a long and rich legacy within the New Zealand container servicing and logistics industry. ContainerCo is one of New Zealand's largest specialist container logistics and depot operators, providing end-to-end services for shipping lines, freight operators, importers, and exporters. It operates a nationwide network of container depots and logistics facilities.

Network Imaging Solutions implemented an OCR gate solution using gantry mounted Mobotix cameras equipped with the integrated Vaxtor Container Code application to automatically identify and record shipping container identification numbers as vehicles pass through dedicated entry and exit points.

Mounted on a fixed gantry structure, the Mobotix cameras capture high resolution images of container sides, top and ends, enabling reliable reading of ISO6346 container codes under varying light and weather conditions. The embedded Vaxtor application processes directly on the camera, extracting container numbers, owner codes and serial numbers in real time without requiring a dedicated external processing server.

An integrated LiDAR sensor continuously monitors the inspection zone, detecting the presence, position, direction of travel and speed of vehicles passing beneath the gantry. LiDAR generated spatial data enables precise vehicle tracking and provides accurate trigger events for image capture, ensuring optimal timing for container code recognition and damage assessment. The LiDAR system also helps distinguish between vehicles, containers, trailers and other objects within the monitored area, improving overall accuracy and reliability.

In addition to container identification, the platform can utilize machine learning and computer vision technologies to analyse captured images for evidence of container damage. Trained models assess container surfaces and structural components to identify, classify, and record defects such as dents, impact damage, corrosion, holes, graffiti and other visible anomalies. Detected damage can be categorized by type, severity, and location on the container, providing operators with actionable information before containers leave a facility.

ARA TŪHONO - PŪHOI To Warkworth

The PÅ«hoi to Warkworth project extended the four-lane Northern Motorway (SH1) 18.5km from the Johnstones Hill Tunnels to just north of Warkworth. It is the first stage of the Ara TÅ«hono – PÅ«hoi to Wellsford project, and was officially opened on June 16 2023.

The Pūhoi to Warkworth project is a PPP (Private Public Partnership) between the Government and a private consortium, the Northern Express Group (NX2).

Network Imaging Solutions was contracted by SICE to provide an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. Tattile cameras were used to log vehicle movements and the data transferred to a SICE back end system for traffic movement analysis. The movement data is used to support highway operations, traffic planning, and transportation management. The system can generate detailed insights into travel patterns and road network performance in near real time.

Interislander logo
KiwiRail - Interislander

Interislander travels the the Cook Strait between the North and South Islands of New Zealand and is one of the most spectacular cruises in the world.

The safety and security of passengers, luggage and staff at the two Ferry Terminals at Wellington and Picton, is of utmost importance, meaning a sophisticated and efficient system is paramount. Interislander had an aged analogue system, which had poor image quality and was becoming slow and ineffective.

We were chosen to lead Interislander's system overhaul. Partnering with Teltrac Communications, we designed a MOBOTIX installation that far exceeded the expectations of this important public safety system.
